Before you even get started detailing, first find a shady place to park. It’s always a good idea to avoid direct sunlight. When washing the car, the sun can cause water spots and swirl marks to form in the paint finish.

Only Use Products Specifically Designed for Cars

In an effort to save a few bucks, some car owners opt to detail their vehicle with regular household products. For example, many people opt to use dish detergent to wash their car. Unfortunately, it can strip away the exterior’s protective wax. Using strong chemicals on your wheels can cause just as many problems. Also, avoid spraying ammonia-based products on your car’s upholstery and dashboard surfaces.

Use a Microfiber Cloth for Drying

After washing your vehicle, it’s important to dry it off. However, be sure to use a microfiber cloth as opposed to a chamois. Microfiber is typically far gentler. It also does a better job of soaking up moisture.

Purchase a Quick Detail Spray

Waxing your vehicle more than four times a year is overkill. Instead of waxing too often, use a quick detail spray in between washes. The purpose of a quick detail spray is to remove light dust and fresh bird droppings from the exterior finish. When applying the formula, spray it evenly over the entire vehicle. You can then wipe it away with a microfiber towel.

Don’t Forget About the Wheels and Tires

Even if the rest of your car is clean, dirty wheels and tires can ruin its appearance. Cleaning these parts should be a hands-on process. After you’ve sprayed the wheels with a good cleaning product, use a soft wheel brush or sponge to break up the dirt. After scrubbing, rinse away the scum. Next, allow the tires to dry. You can then apply tire protectant, which will add a clean look and help protect from sun damage.
